Direct comparison of the X-150 against the machines it gets measured against. Data from published specs and the competitor matrix. No spin, just the numbers.

What each machine is

Spanner Re2 is a downdraft gasifier, 30 to 50 kWe, around 300 units deployed. Volter is downdraft, 40 kWe, around 100 units. Burkhardt builds downdraft units from 50 to 500 kWe with 50 to 80 deployments over 25 years. All three run air-blown on clean wood chips only. The X-150 is a roller-grate downdraft gasifier at 150 kg/h feed, roughly 150 to 200 kWe in its engine configuration, with one validated campaign behind it: 1,939 hours at the COMETHA site in Paris.

Electrical efficiency

Burkhardt leads at 27 to 33 percent. Spanner Re2 sits at 25 to 30 percent. The X-150 lands at 23 to 26 percent, and Volter at 22 to 26 percent. On clean wood, Burkhardt and Spanner genuinely beat the X-150. The X-150's efficiency is not its selling point on a perfect fuel.

CAPEX per kW

Volter undercuts everyone at USD 2,500 to 4,000 per kW. Spanner and the X-150 sit in the same band, USD 3,000 to 5,000. Burkhardt is the most expensive at USD 4,000 to 6,000. On price per kW alone, Volter wins.

Syngas quality

Every competitor publishes air-blown syngas at 4.5 to 6.5 MJ/Nm3, 45 to 50 percent nitrogen ballast. The X-150 in air mode matches that range, then adds a second mode nobody else has: oxy-steam at 12 to 15 MJ/Nm3, effectively nitrogen-free, 33 percent hydrogen, H2/CO of 1.95. Tar outlet after the SyngaPure reformer is below 8 ppm. The competitors do not publish tar outlet figures at all.

Feedstock tolerance

This is where the field separates. Spanner, Volter, and Burkhardt are all locked to clean, dry wood chips by their fixed grates. The X-150 ran 1,939 hours on municipal solid waste digestate, sewage sludge, and horse manure with zero clinkering. The Walzenrost roller grate is the reason. No competitor offers it.

Maintenance and operations

The X-150's COMETHA campaign showed 47 automated startups with 100 percent success, one catalyst regeneration at roughly 1,000 hours with full activity recovery, and projected campaigns of 3,000 to 5,000 hours. Competitors publish service contracts rather than campaign data: Spanner at EUR 5,000 to 12,000 a year, Burkhardt full maintenance at EUR 18,000 to 35,000 a year.

The honest read

On clean wood chips, buyers should pick Burkhardt or Spanner today. They are proven, efficient, and cheaper on that fuel. The X-150's capability is wasted there. The X-150 wins the moment the fuel stops being clean wood: a waste stream with ash, moisture, or contaminants that the operator is already paying to remove. No competitor machine runs that fuel at all. That gap is the entire argument.
