
In villages the grid never reached, nightfall is a decision: study by a flame that eats money and lungs, or go dark. Zero-X released a film about that choice, and about the machine that removes it. The X-150 is a gasifier that fits in a standard 20-ft container and turns the agricultural waste already lying on the ground into continuous electricity, with no grid connection and no diesel supply chain. The village in the film is illustrative; the machine behind it is not. It ran 1,939 hours in a validated campaign in Paris, processing 16,382 kg of residue pellets.
The International Energy Agency counts 750 million people without electricity in 2023, and 80 percent of them live in sub-Saharan Africa. For these communities, the two default answers both fail. Grid extension costs per kilometer and takes years, which is why the lines stop at the edge of the last town. Diesel generators work, but they lock the village into a permanent supply chain at a permanent cost, with fuel trucked in over roads that often do not exist.
Meanwhile the fuel is already there. Harvest residue, the stuff currently burned in the field or left to rot, accumulates within kilometers of almost every home. The film makes the point visually: one pile is the problem, the other is the feedstock.
The market signal is real. Distributed waste gasification at the 50-500 kg/h scale is estimated at EUR 8-15B by 2030, driven by waste disposal costs, energy price volatility, and carbon pricing.
The film is a concept film, and its description says so: the village depicted is illustrative. The machine behind it is real, and it has run. The X-150 operated for 1,939 hours in the COMETHA campaign in Paris, processing 16,382 kg of digestate pellets at 150 kg/h, with continuous runs exceeding 10 days.
Each unit delivers around 145 kWe of electricity and 450 kWth of heat, at a combined CHP efficiency of about 94 percent. That is enough to light a village, run a clinic's cold chain, pump water, and keep a school open after sunset.
Three design choices make this work off-grid. First, the whole system ships in a standard 20-ft container, so there is no building, no concrete pad, and no on-site assembly. Competitors like Spanner Re, with 500+ commercial units, and Volter remain air-blown systems built around wood chips, and none ship containerised. Second, the Walzenrost roller grate handles wet and high-ash agricultural residue, the feedstocks that jam the fixed-grate machines of competitors. Third, the system was developed lean: roughly EUR 7M in total, against the EUR 41M spent by the closest German peer, Agnion, before it stopped. Zero-X built the machine at a 5-10x cost advantage.
The economics hold in the places the film depicts. The African agricultural archetype, a single X-150 in CHP configuration, models at EUR 1.09M net CAPEX, an 11.0 percent IRR, and an 8.1-year payback. Against a diesel supply chain that gets more expensive every year, an asset that converts local waste into power and heat pays for itself while the fuel cost stays at zero.
The film's real argument is what the light makes possible: a girl who studies at night, a clinic that can refrigerate vaccines, a village that stops burning dung indoors. No IRR captures that. It is also what makes the business case durable, because the demand is the daily choice of 750 million people, repeated every night.
The film closes on a line worth repeating: this is the future, not someday, now. The X-150 was designed for the places the grid was never going to reach. It is already validated. What is missing is deployment, and that is the ask.
