The X-150 is a containerised gasifier that turns 150 kg of waste per hour into electricity, heat, and cooling. It ran 80 continuous days in Paris on sewage sludge, horse manure, and municipal waste. It produced syngas with 33% hydrogen at more than double the heating value of an air-blown system, with near-zero emissions. It fits in a shipping container. It connects to existing power infrastructure. It is ready for commercial deployment today.
Why Now
Two facts drive the whole business case: landfills are full and energy is expensive.
Germany, Netherlands, and Sweden have banned landfilling combustible waste. The UK and France tax it at EUR 100-200 per tonne. Indonesia alone generates 67 million tonnes of waste a year, and 40% goes to open dumps that leak methane.
Meanwhile, EU industrial electricity runs EUR 0.15-0.25/kWh. Resorts in the Caribbean and Southeast Asia burn diesel at $0.30-0.50/kWh when the grid drops. Hotels in Bali spend EUR 200,000-500,000 a year on power.
The regulatory clock is ticking. ReFuelEU Aviation mandates 6% SAF blending by 2030. RED III demands 42% renewable transport energy. EU carbon pricing is at EUR 60-90 per tonne and heading to EUR 100-150 by 2030. These are binding laws with penalties.
Small-scale gasification has not moved much in twenty years. Commercial units are air-blown, which dilutes syngas with 45-50% nitrogen, giving you a low-grade fuel that barely runs an engine. And they only take clean wood chips. Feed them palm waste, digestate, or MSW and they clog on tar.
Zero-X built the X-150 to fix both problems.
What We Built
The X-150 is a downdraft gasifier with a rotating roller grate — a Walzenrost. Fixed grates clog when waste ash melts and sinters. The roller grate moves the fuel bed continuously so it does not clog. That one mechanical detail lets the machine handle palm empty fruit bunches, digestate from biogas plants, municipal waste, and sewage sludge — feedstocks that competitors simply cannot process.
Rated at 150 kg/h, runs at about 950C. Two operating modes: air-blown or oxy-steam. The second mode is the reason the machine exists.
Oxy-steam. In air-blown gasifiers, half the gas is nitrogen from the air. It is inert, takes up space, and drops the heating value to 4.5-6.5 MJ/Nm3. Replace the air with pure oxygen (52 kg/h) plus steam (172 kg/h) and the output shifts to 33% hydrogen, 16.9% carbon monoxide, and essentially zero nitrogen. Heating value more than doubles to 12-15 MJ/Nm3. The H2/CO ratio hits 1.95:1 — nearly perfect for making sustainable aviation fuel.
The COMETHA campaign. The X-150 ran at the COMETHA site in Paris for 1,939 hours — 80 straight days — processing 16,382 kg of digestate pellets from MSW, sewage sludge, and horse manure. It is the most documented small-scale oxy-steam dataset in the world.
Key numbers:
Installation. One shipping container, 6-8 meters long, 2.5 meters wide. A concrete pad of 8-15 cubic meters. A cleared area of 100-200 square meters — two parking spaces. 400V, 3-phase, 63A electrical — about what a commercial kitchen draws. 100-500 litres per hour makeup water. Two to four weeks commissioning. Eight to sixteen weeks from concrete pour to first fire.
Competition. Spanner Re sold 500+ units but they are air-blown and wood-only. Agnion/Andritz spent EUR 41 million on a heatpipe reformer and stopped. Sierra Energy's plasma gasification costs $50M+ per installation. Zero-X got the X-150 to commercial validation for about EUR 7 million total — 5x cheaper than comparable tech.
Output. In CHP mode the X-150 delivers around 145 kWe electricity and 450 kWth heat. System efficiency hits 94% when both are used. Add the BioCool absorption chiller and you get 144 kW of cooling — a hotel running its AC off its own trash.
The numbers pencil out. Five archetype site models show IRRs of 9.2-13.8% with payback of 6.8-9.1 years. Best case: Caribbean resort, two X-150s in CHP — EUR 2.3 million CAPEX, 13.8% IRR, 6.8-year payback.
Patents add a moat. Zero-X holds IP on radionuclide capture in gasification, developed for Fukushima's contaminated biomass. That opens a cleanup market no competitor can touch.
Why It Matters
For a resort operator: the EUR 200,000 you spend on diesel and the EUR 50,000 on waste trucks become EUR 300,000 in annual savings. Machine pays itself off in 7-9 years, then free power from your own garbage.
For a factory manager: the EUR 40,000 landfill tax disappears. The gasifier heat replaces natural gas. Biochar earns EUR 100-200 per tonne in carbon credits on Puro.earth.
For a village with no grid and a dump that has been burning for years: one X-150 powers 100-150 homes, stops the methane leak, and produces soil amendment from the biochar. The waste problem becomes an energy asset.
The global distributed waste-to-energy market is estimated at EUR 8-15 billion by 2030. The X-150 is one of maybe three machines on the planet that can address it at sub-500 kg/h scale with real validation data behind it. The other two cost 5-10x more to develop and do not offer oxy-steam.
Distributed gasification has been five years away for thirty years. The X-150 is not five years away. It ran 80 days in Paris. It ships in a container. The unit economics work.
