1,939 Hours. Three Waste Chemistries. Zero Clinkering Events.

The X-150 gasifier ran 1,939 continuous hours on digestate pellets made from municipal solid waste, sewage sludge, and horse manure, and recorded zero clinkering events. The component that made it possible is one rotating grate: the Walzenrost, six years and four failed prototypes in the making. Small-scale gasifiers generally run on clean, dry wood chips because fixed grates fuse shut on anything with real ash content. This machine was designed for the waste stream everyone else avoids.

Why Now

Europe is producing more of the waste that destroys wood-chip gasifiers, and regulators are forcing the issue. Sewage sludge carries 15-25% ash; MSW digestate 8-15%; horse manure 10-18%. Fixed grate systems clinker when ash melts below 950C: the bed fuses, airflow dies, the plant shuts down. The market has been selling wood-burning stoves to a sewage problem.

The regulatory clock is explicit. The EU recast Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive requires phosphorus recovery at treatment plants serving 100,000+ population equivalents by 2029 and 10,000+ by 2032, roughly 3,500 plants across Europe. Germany's AbfKlärV makes P recovery mandatory from 2029. Landfill taxes of EUR 100-200 per tonne in Germany and EUR 100-150 in the Netherlands make disposal the biggest line item a sludge producer faces.

Competitors have not followed. Spanner Re has deployed 500+ gasifiers commercially; every one runs on clean wood chips below 10% moisture. Volter and Syncraft sell in the same 40-140 kg/h range and both demand clean wood. The X-150's niche is precisely what they reject: high-ash, high-alkali feedstock where the grate is the difference between a machine and a maintenance problem.

What We Built

The story starts with the grate. In a fixed-bed downdraft gasifier, the grate sits under the reduction zone, holds the fuel bed, and lets ash fall through. With clean wood, ash content is around 1% and the grate barely matters. Feed sewage sludge, digestate, or manure, and ash content climbs to 15-25% with alkali metals that melt and fuse at gasifier temperatures. Fixed grates clog. Operators stop the plant, break the bed apart, and start again.

Zero-X replaced the fixed grate with the Walzenrost: water-cooled rotating rollers that continuously break up and discharge the ash layer. The development took six years and four failed prototypes. The patents are filed: EP3294461B1 is active in Europe, and the roller grate design is free to practice in the US, where the earlier application was abandoned. It is one rotating part doing the job that shuts down every fixed-grate competitor.

The COMETHA campaign in Paris is the proof. The X-150 processed 16,382 kg of digestate pellets across three feedstock chemistries (MSW digestate, sewage sludge digestate, horse manure) over 1,939 hours of operation: 80.8 days. The Walzenrost recorded zero clinkering events across the entire campaign. Ash discharge was consistent and uniform. No mechanical failures of the grate.

The plant-level numbers hold up too. The campaign logged 94% uptime including scheduled maintenance, with only 3 forced outages: two feed system jams cleared with standard procedure and one ash removal blockage resolved without grate disassembly. None were caused by feedstock chemistry. Tar conversion hit 99.98% through the SyngaPure catalytic reformer, clean enough for direct engine combustion. Operator attention stayed under one hour per 24-hour shift, and the system completed 47 automated startup and shutdown cycles with a 100% success rate.

The X-150 produces 145 kWe and 450 kWth in air-blown CHP mode, the configuration validated for power and heat. The machine ships in a single container. And the development ledger is short: roughly EUR 7 million total, against EUR 41 million spent by Agnion/Andritz on a heatpipe reformer that stopped, and over USD 50 million by Sierra Energy on plasma gasification that is still not commercial. The lean hardware model is a moat by itself.

Why It Matters

For an operator holding digestate, sludge, or manure, the economics are concrete. Landfill and disposal costs run EUR 100-200 per tonne in Germany and EUR 100-150 in the Netherlands; a plant producing 2,000 tonnes of dry solids a year faces EUR 200,000-400,000 in annual disposal bills. The X-150 converts that liability into power, heat, and phosphorus-rich biochar, which also answers the 2029 phosphorus recovery mandate. The five CHP archetype models show IRR from 9.2% to 13.8%, with the best case at 6.8-year payback.

For an investor, the moat is the validation itself. The X-150 is the only small-scale gasifier with more than 1,500 documented hours on sludge-derived fuel. The regulatory deadlines create a captive market measured in thousands of plants. The grate that took six years and four prototypes to build is now the hardest part of the system to copy.

The data is published, and the machine is not a prototype. First commercial units are shipping to reference projects in Portugal and Spain. If you have a waste stream with too much ash for a wood-chip gasifier, that is the market this was built for.
